Packing List we’ve developed over the years

Ages 13 – 15

HIKE will not be a leisurely stroll through the mountains. This is nothing like walking a city block or hiking the rolling hills of the Midwest. You are in the MOUNTAINS!

You will be carrying a backpack weighing anywhere from 25-40 pounds and walking a trail that is full of ups and downs and curves. The climb can be grueling at times, but the scenery is breathtaking, and the sense of satisfaction after completing a climb makes it worth every step.

You will average around 5 miles per day on the trail. Each day, someone on your team will be chosen as the leader for the day. Some of the leaders responsibilities include:

– Being responsible to follow any directions given by the chiefs

– Using the map and compass to get your team to the next camp

– Deciding when to take breaks

– Leading the setting up and tearing down of camp

We will be sleeping in tents and cooking over a fire each day, and hiking in intense heat, or even rain sometimes. There is a very good possibility that you may see a bear, some elk, or other wildlife along the trail.

HIKE will NOT be like summer camp, where you get to go swimming every afternoon, have a cool place to go when it gets hot, shelter from the rain, or other luxuries of camp. It is not intended to be a tortuous time, but rather a time that is a picture of how “real life” is. You will discover this as you go through HIKE and the chiefs share with you the different themes for each day and help you, as a team, to solve any problems or issues that come up. Ultimately, our goal as chiefs is to teach you about life and Godliness through the events of each day. Your experience on HIKE is ultimately determined by your ATTITUDE!
